What Is the Dental Implant Recovery Process?

Nowadays you don’t have to go around with missing teeth if you don’t want to. There are plenty of dental procedures fill the gaps in your teeth. One of the most popular options is dental implants.

Dental implants are, as their name implies, implants that are placed where a tooth is missing. Unlike partial plates and other options for missing teeth, they do not have to be removed. They are permanent since they are implanted in your mouth.

Because they are implanted, though, you must undergo a surgical procedure to have them placed, and that involves a bit of recovery time. Just how long does the dental implant recovery process take, though?

Approximately Six Months to a Year

The entire dental implant recovery process lasts anywhere from six months to a year. First, you’ll have to be examined to make sure that you’re a good candidate for dental implants. You have to have enough bone structure in your jaw in order for the implant to be safely implanted into your gums. If you don’t, prosthodontists can sometimes use a bone graft to build up the area.

Once you’ve been deemed a good candidate, you’ll go in for a surgical procedure where the dental implant will be placed. The dental implant is actually a titanium stud that’s implanted into your gum. An abutment and a dental crown is then placed over the stud to give it a tooth-like appearance.

The first dental crown you’ll receive will be temporary so that there is time for your gums to accept the implant and adjust to it. That usually takes anywhere from four to six months to happen. When the healing is complete, you’ll receive a permanent, custom-fitted crown.
